Great Mother Part 1: Harumi

The artist uses narrative and secondary imagery (the in-view monitor) to suggest the dichotomies between idealised and normal relationships of mothers and daughters in Japanese culture. Young Harumi rebels against her mother s order to go to school, while on a monitor in the room, kimonoed women sit serenely together; traditional society and modern society are juxtaposed, and the images emphasize the divisions and conflicts between the two.
