  • Payuk Sashkeehitowin (One Love), 2005 A young heterosexual Native couple, both early to mid- twenties struggling with abstinence serves as a visual backdrop for larger questions of sexual repression and the impact of colonization on Native sexuality. Has a major ad campaign for any product ever shown a picture that displays sexy Natives? Why are there no books on Native sexuality? The de-sexualization of Natives is another by-product of the ongoing colonization of native people in Canada. The problem is both internal and external for Native communities. Internally, communities refuse to acknowledge the realities of sexual dysfunction and repression. Externally, the larger society reinforces the non-sexual, one dimensional and stereotypical Native. Under these circumstances, Natives must struggle to de-colonize themselves and reclaim their sexuality.
